What is it? NuvaRingis a vaginal ring that contains the same hormones that are in birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. NuvaRingis inserted once a month. Leave it in for at least 21 days; when you take it out you will get your period.
How does it work? When used properly, the ring releases hormones that control the growth and release of eggs from your ovaries. It also alters the lining of your uterus making it more difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg.
How effective is the Ring? If you take it correctly, it is 97-99% effective in preventing pregnancy. If you take it out and forget to put back in after an hour, it may no longer effective and you should use alternative birth control methods. It is also important to put a new one in within a week of the first day of your period. NuvaRing does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
How do I insert NuvaRing? The ring is very flexible --just pinch it together and push it into the vagina gently until you cannot feel it. The vagina will hold it in place. If you can feel it, just push it slightly higher into the vagina with your finger. To take it out, curl your finger around the ring and pull it out. It cannot get lost.
Can I have sex with it in? Yes. Some couples do not mind feeling the ring and some prefer to take it out during intercourse. If you take it out, just rinse it off and replace it within an hour after intercourse.
